. The British rust fungi (Uredinales), their biology and classification. Uredineae. ON LILIACE.'f: 235 On Omithocjalum uiiibellatum. Rare; Lythain and near Carlisle (Rev. Hilderic Friend). March—May. (Fig. 181.) As usual, only sperraogones and teleutospores are present on these specimens. Fischer records that he found the fungus on 0. umbellatum in March and April in great plenty, with spermogones and teleutospores, but no secidia ; the infested parts of the leaves were swollen, compact, and hnrder than the healthy portions. He suggests (C'entralbl. f. Bakt. 2. xv. 230) with great probability

He suggests (C'entralbl. f. Bakt. 2. xv. 230) with great probability that the a3cidia with spermogones which are also found on Ornithogalum {JEcidium ornithogaleum Bubdk, Annal. Myc. iii. 222) belong to some hetercecious species. The fungus on 0. umbellatum is a biologic race ; it does not attack 0. nutans, much less other allied species of Liliacea), such as Muscari and Hyadnthus, although P. Lilia- cearum is recorded on them. Fischer adds that the mycelium is not perennial, but infection takes place afresh each spring by the basidiospores of the overwintered teleutospores, from leaves lying on the ground.
