Development of the Range Rovers started in November 1968. Most of the pre production vehicles carried the name VELAR for running on the road in disguise there were no Land Range Rover badges. Very little changed from prototypes to production, smooth dash to grained, aluminium bonnet to steel, wheels went from cream to silver. Most of the prototypes carried a YVB registration and had an H suffix. An additional batch of 20 press fleet vehicles was built carrying registration marks NXC 231H to NXC 250H. Around 38 of these pre production vehicles still survive. This vehicle YVB 162H was purchased by Dunsfold in the early 90s after suffering a bad engine fire and was fully rebuilt keeping as many original parts as possible, but sadly the aluminium bonnet was beyond repair. YVB 162H is a working vehicle used in many photo shoots and is driven often.
