Above Newtonards in County Down, Northern Ireland, is a rocky, treeless rampart built by a long forgotten chieftain of Ard. Crowning it today is the Scottish Baronial style Scrabo Tower built in 1857 as a memorial to Charles Stewart, 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, a diplomat and soldier who tried to alleviate the effects of the Potato Famine. The tower was also lived in, the first tenant being William McKay, a foreman at the nearby quarry and his wife. Three of William's grandchildren, born in the tower, went on to run a very popular tearoom
