It will be ob-served that the principal variation fromthe features of other similar types onvalve gearing is that the links are located counterbalance springs, counter-weightsor other balancing appliances here is literally no stress or strain uponthe reverse lever and reach rod connec-tions Of recent years the difficulty inhandling the reverse lever on the largerlocomotives has become such that it ispositively dangerous and appliances havebeen constructed for moving the reverselever by the use of compressed air. Theappliances although successful in theiroperation are of considerable cost and arcnot entirely free from the incidental dis-orders to which all mechanical appliancesworking under high pressure are liable^It may be added that the design of thevalve gearing, although newly applied insuch form and under such conditionsthat it seems likely to come into favor,is not exactly new in the principle of. SOUTHERN LOCOMOTIVE EQUIPPED WITH SOUTHERN LOCOMOTIVE VALVE GEAR. in a horizontal position and the linksbeing stationary, it entirely has theeffect of doing away with any perceptiblewear at this point, as the block onlymoves when the reverse lever is moved As is well known the slip in the link-is one of the chief sources of weaknessin the operation of the shifting link, andthe trouble is not altogether eradicatedin the oscillating link of the Walschaertsvalve gear. And not only is the rapidwear in the link almost entirely avoided, but the limited number of joints in themotion reduce the general wear to muchless than half the usual amount, as inthe case of the Southern valve gear thereare only eight possible points of wear oneach side, making sixteen points on bothsides of the locomotive. In addition to this advantage we havepreviously pointed out that there are no using a link placed h
