Woman belonging to an untouchable community, the Harijan. In the background, two of her children ( India)
Harijan was a word used by Mahatma Gandhi to refer to untouchables, outcasts. (Harijan means children of god.) Now, this word has become obsolete : Indians prefer using the term dalit ("oppressed"). But in Gujarat, in the dry plains of Kutch, an untouchable community is still called harijan. A group whose women are known to stitch beautiful embroideries.
