De Montfort University's Hugh Aston Building, in Leicester, Leicestershire, England

De Montfort University is based in Leicester city centre, and takes its name from the famous 13th c. Earl of Leicester, Simon De Montfort (1208 - 1265). It was created in 1992, when Leicester Polytechnic was raised to the status of a university, the polytechnic itself having been formed in 1969 from the Leicester Colleges of Art and Technology, whose own roots dated back to 1870. On 17th March 2010 the university formally opened the £35m Hugh Aston Building as the new home of the Faculty of Business & Law. Named after the important 16th Hugh Aston ( - 1558), who also served as Mayor of Leicester (1541-2) and as an MP for the borough (1555), it roughly occupies the former site of the James Went Building, which was demolished in the Winter of 2004-5, and is also very close to the site of the great Collegiate Church of the Annunciation of St. Mary, where Aston once served as Master of the Choristers.
