Edward East (1879-1938), US plant geneticist. East specialised in crop research, particularly hybrid forms of maize. Both he and George Shull developed hybrid maize as a viable crop. East worked at Harvard University from 1909, becoming a professor at the Bussey Institution. He became Professor of Genetics there in 1926. A supporter of eugenics, and author of a number of general books on science, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1925.
