Ferdinandea volcano location, 1831. Historical map of the location of the Ferdinandea volcano after it emerged from the sea in July 1831. This volcano is in the Mediterranean Sea, around 30 kilometres off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily (centre). Ferdinandea is at centre left, just above the first 'R' in Mediterraneo. This volcano is part of the underwater volcanic complex of Empedocles. The summit of Ferdinandea is usually  only a few metres below the surface of the sea. Volcanic activity on Ferdinandea has been reported for over 2000 years, and the volcano has emerged from the sea, and then eroded away again, several times. This eruption led to a dispute over the island, between Sicily, France and England.
