LaSalle returned and laid the foundations of the Mis-sissippi settlements in Illinois, thence he proceeded to France, whereanother expedition was fitted out, of which he was commander, and in twosucceeding voyages failed to find the outlet of the river by sailing alongthe shore of the gulf.
