Body and foot are divided intothree equal sections by pronounced ridges which are really tlienoses of grotesque devil heads—or the tao tieh ogre linea-ments—that form the chief decorative motive of the piece, piercedbosses on either side of tlie ridges being the monsters eyes andthe horns being ingeniously worked into a bold incised scrollholding the decorative scheme together. Interspaces filled withfret-scrolls of lighter incision, so that the whole body of thevase is occupied by decorations, excepting a depressed channelencircling it laterally. The entire expansive surface is coveredwith a soft patina of gray-olive tone with silvery notes, andbright green incrustations. Height, 9y„ inches; dinmeler. 11^4 inches. Two similar jars are in the Bo^ton Museum of Fine 171—Rich GiiP:Ex Broxze {Chou) Bi-convox, lightly spreading toward its two-pointed base, with atapering tubular handle or neck for suspension. On cither facetwo series of nine conical protuberances or nipples, arranged inrows of three within bands outlined by small bosses. On theflat top-surface a deeply-incised conventional scroll. Rich patinaof dark olive-green, olive-yellow and brown notes, and even dis-tribution. In carved teakwood frame-stand. Utiijht. IJ/o inches; villi stand, 33]/^ inches.
