NYE, John, senior president of the5th quorum of Seventy, was born , 1835, in the parish of Leigh, countyKent, England. About the time of theso-called gold fever, in Australia, heemigrated to that country with hisfathers family. Here he heard thegospel preached by Mormon Elders,believed, and was baptized July 11, 1858,by Thos. S. Johnson, an Elder fromUtah, at Kyneton, colony of afterwards he was ordained aPriest by the same Elder. Emigrat-ing to America, he sailed from Mel-bourne, Australia, Dec. 28, 1858, on theAmerican ship Milwaukee, and ar-rived in San Francisco March 9, and two of his brothers workedtheir passage before the mast. In Sep-tember, 1860, he left California for Utah,. arriving there about the middle of Oc-tober. Most of the family settled inOgden. John was ordained a SeventyDec. 17, 1861, by John Thompson, andbecame identified with the 54th March. 1863, he married Miss ElisaFay, a native of England, and soonafterwards he located with his wife inBrigham City; in 1867 he moved to Lo-gan, Cache county, and in 1869 settledin Calls Fort, Box Elder county. , 1886, he was set apart as president ofthe 5th quorum of Seventy, and he be-came senior president of that quorum Feb. 12, 1880. From 1873 to 1894 hewas associated with the Calls FortSunday school, most of the time assuperintendent.
