The seed should be sown in February or March, either in the hotbed or in boxes or pots placed in a warm, sunny window, using line, mellow soil and watering carefully as required. When the seedlings are about 2 inches tall, reset them in pots or in rows 4 to 5 inches apart, keeping the temperature about 60°. A subsequent transplanting will make them more branching and stocky. Do not set the plants out in the open ground until all danger from frost is past. As the weather becomes warm and settled, harden the plants by exposing them to the open air for a few hours in the middle of the day for a week or so and then plant them out in a warm, sunny spot and water them freely until they are well estab- lished. A packet of seed will produce plenty of plants for the average small garden; an ounce of seed will produce 1,000 plants or more. It is not only cheaper to grow your own Tomato plants from seed but it is also much safer for you are then assured of having jyst the variety that you want. The standard varieties of Tomatoes are divided into two general classes—those having scarlet fruits and those with pink or purplish fruits. In both classes there are early, midseason and late sorts, some that are dwarf in growth and, therefore, particularly suitable for the small patch, and some that are distinctly globe-shaped.
