Delavan Hills, and underthe firm name of Hills, McLean & Williams opened a general dry goods store onCourt street. Mr. Hills and Mr. McLean were former acquaintances in Otsegocounty, and in Binghamton Mr. Williams was taken into the firm by reason of hisextensive acquaintance in the city. In the junior partner was succeeded byFred H. Haskins, and the firm name was thereupon changed to Hills, McLean &Haskins, as now known, although Mr. Hills was removed by the hand of death in. PAGE W. Our people remember thecomparatively small stock carried by the house when it began business a few doorsbelow the present location. Subsequent years have witnessed a marvelous growthin the operations of the firm, and now it occupies more ground floor space than anydry goods concern in the city. This certainly indicates that the business has beenprudently and successfully managed, and that the proprietors have the confidenceand respect of our people. Mr. McLean has striven faithfully to accomplish the de-sirable results thus attained, for during the last ten years he has virtually been thebusiness head of the house.
