Tracheostomy and nasogastric tube. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of the head and neck of a patient who has been fitted with a permanent tracheostomy and a nasogastric tube. A tracheostomy is an operation that allows a patient to breathe through a tube inserted in their throat, without having to use their nose or mouth. A nasogastric tube is used to supply nutrients to the stomach. Both forms of tubing are used to support patients in hospital situations such as an intensive care unit (ICU), which can include artificial ventilation.
