Nearthe loot of the mountain, old Fort Halleckand one of the most important stations ofthe Overland Stage Company, were located;both are now abandoned. Elk Mount.\in—is a noted, landmark,and quite a curiosity in its way. It risesto a great height, its top being coveredwith snow a great portion of the year,and at any time snow can be found inplaces on the summit. On the west side, thesummit is easily reached by a good road,made by the lumbermen. The mountainis nearlj round, about six miles in diame-ter at its base. Its sides are covered withdense forests of pine, aspen and is worthy of note, that this is the onlypoint where the Jatter species of timbei-is found along the line of the road. Itgrows in profusion with the spruce in thegorges, m ar the summit. To the soulh is a fine valley, about 15miles w ide and 20 miles long. Pass Creek,which rises in the Medicine Bow Moun-tains, runs through this valley on its■way to tlie North Platt3 River. Large5 quantities of hay are cut in the botto
