Bartholdi was the sculptor of the statue of Lafayette, in Union Square, New York City ;of the equestrian statue of Yercingetorix, inParis, and of a colossal group presented byFrance to Switzerland. The Lion of Belfortis regarded as his masterpiece. He paintedseveral canvases in his later years, two of whichwere entitled, respectively, Old Californiaand New THE STATUE OK LIBERTY IN NEW YORK HARBOR. (The largest bronze statue in the world,—151 feet from thepedestal to the end of tlie torch, the figure being 111 feethigh and the torch being »X> feet above tide level.
