Ranger 5 spacecraft launch preparations, 1962. Ranger 5 was a spacecraft launched by NASA in October 1962 to study the Moon. The spacecraft malfunctioned after launch and lost power. Instead of impacting the Moon, it passed within 725 kilometres of the surface (a lunar flyby). The launch was carried out with an Atlas LV-3 and Agena-B rocket combination. Photographed prior to the launch on 18 October 1962, at Launch Complex 12 (LC-12) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, USA.
