Whim Gin mine winding drum Beamish Museum north east England UK
The Whim Gin was used in 18th and early 19th century coal mines to lift coal and men from deep mines. This photograph shoes a replica machine. The horse would rotate the vertical axis drum with the ropes being lead over pulley wheels and down the mine shaft to the right of the device. By the 1820s these machines were being replaced by steam engines.
