MP George Galloway interviewed at the Ethnic Catering Alliance demonstration in London

The Ethnic Catering Alliance is made up of owners and staff of restaurants serving Chinese, Indian, Bangladeshi, Turkish and other ethnic foods in the UK. Tightening immigration restrictions make it harder for them to source staff from abroad as cooks and waiters. They also complain of an increased frequency of raids on restaurants during working hours by immigration police who remove any staff not carrying papers that prove they are in the UK and working legally, leaving them unable to serve customers. They claim that many of those detained are legal but are simply not carrying documents to prove it. While no one in the UK needs to carry identity documents, workers in this industry at at risk if they do no do so. Pay rates in ethnic restaurants are often very low, and immigrants who grow up here look for jobs with more pay and better conditions and prospects. These businesses rely on a supply of cheap labour from abroad.
