Singapore: Lee Kuan Yew (16 September 1923 - 23 March 2015), first Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore (r. 1959-1990), being escorted into the Pentagon, USA, during his time as Senior Minister (r. 1990-2004), 2 May 2002. Lee Kuan Yew, GCMG, CH (also Lee Kwan-Yew), is a Singaporean statesman. He was the first Prime Minister of the Republic of Singapore and was one of the longest serving Prime Ministers in the world. He oversaw the separation of Singapore from Malaysia in 1965 and its subsequent transformation from a underdeveloped colonial outpost into a major Asian economic power.
