Transactions of the Entomological Society of London . sent to Lord Walsingham, and, withthe exception of one which was spoilt, were kindly preservedby him. The specimens are now to be seen in the HopeDepartment, Oxford University Museum, and in the BritishMuseum of Natural History. The last series of experiments described in this papergrew out of the surprising restriction of susceptibility tothe younger stages of G. quercifolia. The results naturallysuggested further experiments upon other species wellknown to be highly sensitive, and I immediately fixedupon Am/pliidasis betnlaria as the most suitable for thepurpose. The investigation was carried out entirely bythe present writer, in the laboratory at Wykeham House,Oxford. The results are clearly shown in the accompany-ing diagram and summary. The Roman figures representthe corresponding stages of larval life. The shaded squaresindicate stages passed in a black environment, the unshaded, stages passed in the green surroundings. hetioeen lepidopterous larvie and their stirro^tndings. 319. Colour of mature larva;. 5 green, 1 intermediate. 1 dark greenish-brown (inter-mediate). 1 greyish smoky-black. 9 black (1 dark brownish,3 with dull greyish patches).1 grey. 4 black. 5 black (overspread withgrey). 1 brownish-black. 6 dark (with greypatches). 3 intermediate. 3 dark (respectivelyoverspread with grey, greenish on sides, andwith pale yellowish spots). 1 green (with browndorsal line and lateralpatches). 2 black. 2 dark overspread withgrey. 1 bright green. 2 green, sprinkled withgrey, 1 greenish inter-mediate. 1 whitish, 2 blackishwith grey markings. 1 distinct but dull greenwith brown broad dorsalline and slight lateral traces. A glance at the diagram and results proves conclusivelythat there is no restriction of susceptibility to the youngerstages of this species. Experiment B-^ shows the stronginfluence of a black environment applied only to the twolatest stages, while A^ shows considerable effects traceab
