Hill Fortress of Gwalior

The Hill Fortress of Gwalior is built on a large rock outcrop near the City of Gwalior. The original fort was probably built in the 6th century but a more substantial fort was constructed in 773 AD. The fort has changed hands many times through the history of conquests of Northern India. Narasingh Rao and his successors held the fort into the 16th century. It was a major prison in the Mughal period and many an unsuccessful claimant to the Mughal throne was imprisoned and put to death in this place. During the advance of British rule over India the fort was taken by Major Popham in 1790. Subsequently the fort changed hands between the British and the Scindia dynasty until the Scindias became a protectorate under British rule. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857 the famed Rani of Jhansi fought over the fort with the British and the Scindias. She gained fame as a leader of the rebellion and died heroically defending the fort which was conquered by General Sir Hugh Rose. He restored it to the Scindias in 1858. The fort’s line of defence follows the precipitous edge of the outcrop with a high wall and a series of towers. The entrance is through a set of seven gates including the Hathi or Elephant Gate. Inside are found the Man Mandir Palace, the Gujari Palace, the Teli Temple and other relics of the activities of its rulers.
