Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), British computer pioneer who worked with Charles Babbage (1792-1871). Born Augusta Ada Byron, she was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron (1788-1824) and his wife Anne Isabella Byron (1792-1860). In 1835, the year this portrait was painted by Margaret Sarah Carpenter (1793-1872), she married William King-Noel (1805-1893), 1st Earl of Lovelace, becoming Baroness Lovelace. From 1838, when her husband became an earl, she was known as the Countess of Lovelace. This copy of the portrait includes a quotation from Byron's 'Childe Harold': 'Ada! sole daughter of my house and heart.'
