Skin anatomy. Computer illustration of a cross-section through the epidermis (dark pink) and dermis (light pink) of human skin. At right is a hair shaft (brown) in its follicle. Halfway down the follicle is a sebaceous gland (yellow), which produces oily sebum, and to the left of the hair is a hair erector muscle. Also seen within the dermis is a coiled sweat gland (red), sensory nerves (blue vertical lines) and blood vessels (red and blue horizontal lines). Fat deposits (light brown) are found in a subcutaneous layer below the dermis.
