Photo of physicist and chemist Marie Curie (1867 - 1934) with her daughters Irene and Eve and American journalist and magazine editor Marie Mattingly Meloney. Polish-born Curie, who became a French citizen, was a pioneer in the field of radioactivity, the first person to win two Nobel Prizes (Physics 1903 and Chemistry 1911) and discovered two new elements - polonium and radium. The photo, by Bain News Service, was taken in 1921 when Curie arrived in New York for a fund-raising tour of the United States. Eve (1904 – 2007) is seated to the left of the picture, Irene (1897 – 1956) is standing to the right of the picture and Meloney (1878 – 1943) is standing centre behind Marie Curie who is seated in the centre. Irene went on to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935, along with her husband Frederic Joliot, for the discovery of artificial radioactivity.
