200-inch () Hale Telescope at the Mount Palomar Observatory in Los Angeles, California, USA was completed in 1955. At that time, it was the largest optical telescope in the world and held this title until 1976. Named after the astronomer George Ellery Hale, who proposed and oversaw its installation, the Hale Telescope facilitated many significant advances in astronomy. Notably, it enabled the first observation of a brown dwarf star and the first optical spectrum obtained from a quasar.
