Umbilical cord blood testing. Gloved hand testing white blood cells from umbilical cord blood. The blood was harvested from an umbilical cord and placenta, after the birth of the baby that they supported. This blood contains stem cells that develop into white and red blood cells and platelets. The cross-matching of the white blood cells will allow the cord blood to be used to treat diseases like leukaemia, a cancer of the white blood cells. Photographed at the Northern Cord Blood Bank, Newcastle, England, part of the National Blood Service.
