Open star cluster in Carina nebula, JWST images


Composite James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) image of the open star cluster NGC 3324 in the Carina Nebula. At top is part of a gigantic gaseous cavity where extremely massive hot young stars are forming. Pink and red areas are young stars with planet-forming discs. Ultraviolet radiation and stellar winds from the young stars are sculpting and eroding the nebula's wall (brown). Some of this erosion can be seen here in the hot ionised gas and dust that appears as 'steam' rising from the wall. NGC 3324 lies about 7,500 light years from Earth. Image obtained by the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI).
