A VISIT TO MOUNT KENIA. 347 little more than a mouth from England by way of Mombasa and theUganda Riiilway. Mr. Hutchins, Chief Conservator of Forests, and Mr. Ross, Directorof Public Works in British East Africa, have recently returned from atour round the Kenia forest and a visit to the glaciers. It is somewhatsurprising that the Kenia Alpine region has not been visited sinceMaekinders memorable expedition in August and September of journey will be found described in the Journal of the RoyalGeographical Society for May 1900. It will be ever memorable as thefirst successful attempt made to reach the Kenia summit after severalothers, Count Teleki, Dr. Gregory, Captain Dundas, and Dr. Kolb, had. Fig. 2.—The tussocks on the south side of Mt. Kenia. Height about r2,0u0 region. failed. Maekinders successful ascent was made at the expense of asomewhat costly expedition, involving the bringing of two Swiss guides, and the traverse in British East Africa of a country at that time stillhostile. Teleki got up to 14,000 feet and Gregory up to the highest ofthe Alpine regions apart from the Peak. This his slender resources didnot allow him to reach, but Gregory did wonders with the means he hadat command. At last in 1899, when the Uganda Railway had arrivedin sight of the Kenia snows, and when, it is said, a German expeditionwas being organised to ascend Kenia, Mackinder and Hausberg per-formed the feat which should render their names ever memorableamongst Englishmen. Now it is a comparatively easy matter to study the Alpine region ofKenia. The natives are friendly everywhere. 348 SCOTTISH GEOGRAPHICAL MAGAZINE. Quite recently the Pax Britaii
