Rule.—Multiply one-sixth of the lowest tensile strengthfound stamped on any plate in the cylindrical shell by thethickness—expressed in inches or parts of an inch—of thethinnest plate in the same cylindrical shell, and divide by theradius or half diameter—also expressed in inches—and the re-sult will be the pressure allowable per square inch of surfacefor single riveting, to which add twenty per centum for doubleriveting. The hydrostatic pressure applied, tinder this table and rule,must be in the proportion of one hundred and fifty ]iounds tothe square incii, to one hundred pounds to the square inch ofthe working pressure allowed.
