With Wide Firebox for Soft Coal. Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad. The Chicago & Eastern Illinois has Just received five locomo-tives from the Pittsburg Locomotive Works. They are two-cylinder compounds, with a grate area of 72 sq. ft., which islarger than that of recent engines with wide grates for softcoal. The cylinders are 21% and 33 by 30 in. and the drivingwheels 54 ins. In diameter. The grate is 9 ft. long and8 ft. wide, and, owing to the width, the cab was placed infront of the firebox. The new engines have been runningabout six weeks, which is too short a time for an estimate oftheir qualities. These engines have Mr. Wightmans form ofcylinder and frame construction which was used on the verylarge Pittsburgh, Bessemer & Lake Erie engines (AmericanEngineer, .July, 1900, page 214, and September, page 280). Theframes are of cast steel
