Was born in Philadelphia in 1840, and on Aug-nst 4, 1862, enlisted as a Sergeant in the One Hun-dred and Eighteenth Penns3dvania Infantry. Thisregiment was soon hurried to the front for the de-fence of Washington, was attached to the Fifth Corpsof the Army of the Potomac, and in less than amonth had suffered heavil}^ in an action at Shepherds-town, \^irginia, September 20, 1862, where SergeantAshbrook was desperateh wounded. Rejoining hisregiment before he had fully recovered from hiswounds, he served in the Chancellorsville Campaign,but was invalided in consequence, and ordered to theBaltimore Hospital. Commissioned Second Lieuten-ant, to date from March 26, 1863,. he again rejoinedhis regiment, and served in the Mine Run June 6, 1864, he was promoted to the grade ofFirst Lieutenant, and on November 8, 1864, to thatof Captain, participating in all of the enga
