Zeit. 9, author recommends the construction of chimneyswith equal inside width from the base to the top. Thereare two ways of building such chimneys—viz. (1) dressingthe bricks in nearly every course of the brickwork, which plan involves a great deal of troublesome workand waste of material, and is therefore not advisable ;or (2) building the chimney in several steps, and givingthe top end of each step the normal width height of these steps should not exceed 5*5 regards the calculation for the inside width of thechimney, it is essential that its narrowest section benearly equal to the sum of the airspaces left between thefire-bars. This width must even be increased for lowchimneys, whereas it may be a little diminished for highones. Fo
