BISHOP, Richard Moore, governor of Ohio(1878-80), was born in Fleming county, Ky., , 1812. During his youth he led the ordinaryrough life of the frontier, obtaining a most meagreeducation. Kentucky had not been admittedinto the Union until 1792, when the white popu-lation numbered only 75,000 andIndian wars continued to distractand alarm the settlers. Indeed,a scheme was on foot at the timewhen Bishop lived in Kentuckyto make that state an indepen-dent sovereignty, so bitter wasthe feeling against the nationalgovernment for its alleged fail-ure to afford adequate protectionto its western territory. Bishop,like many others, eventually grewtired of the condition of things,and, although he remained inKentucky until 1848, he tlien re-moved to Cincinnati and enteredthe grocery business. He soonbecame successful and was formany years at the head of a larsjewholesale grocery house, fiewas public-spirited and highlyrespected, and in 1859 was electedmayor of the city.
