Our rival, the rascal : a faithful portrayal of the conflict between the criminals of this age and the defenders of society, the police . and so exactly registeredthat, on holding to the light, only one perfect lettering paper is only sold under contract to the proper officialsof the road which uses it, rendering it practically impossiblefor spurious tickets to be printed. The necessity of private watchmen for the protection ofcertain classes of property is generally recognized, but thesecurity of such protection de-pends, of course, on the fidelityof the employee. It thereforebecomes necessary to havesome means of determin-ing the watchmans pres-ence and attention toduty. This demand hasbeen met by the inven-tion of various automatictime-registers or watch-mans clocks (operatedby clockwork or by elec-tricity) which will recordexactly the time whenthe watchman visits hispost of duty. Of course it isabsolutely necessary to guardagainst any fictitious record madeby the use of false keys or by tampering with the electric wires, for if the watchman can get at the mechanism of the clock, itsrecord is 4i6 OUR RIVAL, THE RASCAL. One of the latest devices for this purpose, which is used ex-tensively by the principal financial institutions of New YorkCity, is shown in the accompanying illustration. Theclock being wound and started, the dial travels regularly pasta point where a stylus is made to puncture the paper by simplyturning a knob at the top of the clock. It is screwed to thewall from the inside and the glass cover, through which thewatchmans record is visible at all times, is locked in place by asimple but effective automatic time lock which can not beopened by any key. When the full week has run out, it imme-diately unlocks itself and the record can be remove
