Exterior of main W gate of Pevensey Roman fort, the C4th 'Saxon Shore' fort of Anderitum. Around 491 (Romans left Britain in 440s) the fort was captured by Aelle, chieftain of the South Saxons, & his son Cissa who killed all of the fort's British defenders. On 28 September 1066 the Normans landed at Pevensey & William camped within the walls before advancing to Hastings. The Normans went on to build a castle within the Roman fort which now lies inland as the harbour has silted up. The site was further fortified against the Spanish Armada (1588) and against the Germans in WWII.
