A city centre post office earmarked for closure is to get a new home at Manchester town hall. The Brazennose Street branch had been under threat since last summer, when the Post Office announced plans for a nationwide shake-up of its network. Its closure would have left just one Crown branch in the city centre, on Spring Gardens. But the Post Office has now announced it will instead move the facility across Albert Square and into the new town hall extension, which also houses the council’s customer service centre. The decision comes after months of campaigning by both Manchester councillors and trade unionists. In recent months the town hall’s Labour group had passed a motion promising to fight the move - and called in Post Office bosses to answer questions from a panel of councillors. City centre councillor Kevin Peel said the latest announcement represented a major victory for Labour. He said: “I am delighted that we have been able to not only save the Post Office from closure but to provide an even better service for city centre residents and businesses.” The new branch would have new longer opening hours - from 9am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 9am to - plus two new self-service kiosks. While the Post Office had originally planned the closure as a cost saving measure - and because its lease was due to run out on its current base - it is understood the council managed to persuade bosses that there was enough demand for a base on the town hall extension’s Mount Street side. The plans formed part of Post Office plans for two new styles of branch - main and local, the latter housed in convenience stores. It said the move formed an essential part of its drive to modernise the service, but the move prompted thousands of people to sign petitions against it across the country. The Post Office said: “The move would enable us to maintain a Crown Post Office in this part of the city while providing a modern, state-of-the-art bran
