Among the number wasa band of religious enthusiasts from the Palatinate, whohad left their native land to escape the religious persecu-tion which had again broken out over the fated Rhinevalley upon the accession of Karl Philip as Elector Pala-tine, who had reintroduced the Catholic religion. A systemof oppressing his Protestant subjects was inaugurated andpersisted in, notwithstanding the vigorous protests fromthe Protestant ruler of Prussia and the States General,supported, as they were, by the intercession of King Georgeof England.
