Second World War gravestone of an unknown Merchant Navy sailor in Cladh Mhuire graveyard on Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides
The cemetery at Cladh Mhuire is the only early Christian site on Benbecula which remains in use. There is little direct evidence but legend associates the earliest Christian presence in the island with the 6th century monks of St Columba's Iona and it is possible that this is the origin of the graveyard.
