If they are due simply to increased osmotic pressure, then, conversely, threshold con- centrations of all four substances should produce the same osmotic pressure. However, the computed osmotic pressures at threshold concentrations for sodium chloride, hydrochloric acid, sucrose and quinine are given in Table I and show a wide range of values for the four substances.
