Museum to Anton Chekhov's book, "Sakhalin Island", Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Sakhalin Island Остров Сахалин Russia
The museum is devoted entirely to Chekhov's book, Sakhalin Island, which he wrote after his three month visit in 1890 to review conditions in the penal settlements to which the island had been almost entirely given over from the mid-19th century. He was there during the summer but became well informed of the harshness of conditions in winter with the mostly sub-arctic climate The book is the pre-eminent work of literature relating to the island at that time which, from the mid-19 century, marked the first settlement of what had previously been inhabited by indigenous tribes with occasional arrivals from China and Japan. The statue is of The Lady with The Little Dog, one of Chekhov's best known short stories.
