The work of construction has already begunfor the extension of the Nevada Central from Ledliein Lander County, under the name of the NevadaSouthern Railway, which will pass through the richmining region of , and extending to ajunction with the road from California and from theEast. Tho father of our present subject being a farmer ofno great wealth, his earlydays were spent in activepursuits, and were only varied b}- his attendance atthe district school. In September, 1853, he entereda high school kept by B. B. Allen, at Vergennes,Vermont, and at the expiration of the term, re-turned to his fathers farm, and worked until theschool opened again the next September, when heonce more settled down to his studies in good earn-est. After his second term, he taught a school forfour months. During his twenty-first year of lifehe emigrated to Illinois, but returned to his nativeState, and taught school that winter. In the spring of185C he again went to Illinois, and for a period ofnearly two years was engaged in teaching school, andreading law.
