He was brevetted captain to date from August 1, 1864, for gallant and meritorious services at the battle ofBethesda Church and the campaign before Richmond,and brevet major, March 13, 1865, for good conductand gallant services during the war, and appointed cap-tain in the Twentieth U. S. Infantry, to date Jul)- 28,1866, but declined. In November, 1864, he was ordered to Chicago, Illi-. nois, on mustering duty, and in May, 1865, to CampParole, Annapolis, Maryland, to muster out paroledprisoners. In July he was ordered to join his battery,and in October was ordered with it to Fort Jefferson,Dry Tortugas, Florida ; in .May, 1867, he was transferredto Battery C, at Fort Monroe, Virginia; in May, 1869,graduated from the Artillery School, and was ordered tojoin Battery K, at Fort Sullivan, Eastport, Maine. In May, 1S70, he received his commission as captainin his regiment, to date from January 5, 1870, and orderedto join Battery L, at Fort Warren, Boston harbor ; inSeptember of the same year, he was ordered with hisbattery to Fort Adams, Newport, Rhode Island. On October 7, 1874, he was placed on the retired list,on account of wounds received in the line of duty; inAugust, 1882, he was appointed secretary and treasurerof the U. S.
