Egyptian mummy in the x-ray deparment at Brigham & Women's Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA - x- ray plates of the skull are seen at right. This mummy is one of several that were sent from the Museum of Fine Arts for x-ray and CT (Computed Tomography) examinations at the hospital. Both techniques allowed images of the mummified bodies to be made without disturbing the coffins and damaging their contents. The collaboration between museum & hospital was aimed at giving an insight into the pathological conditions of the bodies at time of death an to reveal information on their present condition for purposes of conservation and display in the museum.
