Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen, Wales, UK, detail of an early C14th graveslab showing a human head blowing a hunting horn. The fragmentary slab showing scenes from a hare hunt is inscribed: "Here lies Edward son of Iorwerth". It was found at the W end of the choir during the 1851 excavations. The abbey was founded 12 January 1201 by Madoc ap Gruffydd Maelor the ruler of Powys with 13 Cistercian monks & several lay-brothers from the abbey of Strata Marcella near Welshpool. Named Valle Crucis (Valley of the Cross) after the C9th Eliseg's Pillar a little to the north.
