This in-cludes reducing rod brasses in case the wear limit of1/16 in. has been reached. The jackshaft brasses aretested for lost motion, and they are closed if this isrequired. The same thing is done with the main motorbearings, which are tested for lift, and if the limit of1/16 in. is reached they are replaced, this operationbeing effected by removing the bearing caps and jacking June 17, 1916] ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL 1121. P. R. R. LOCOMOTIVE MAINTENANCE—DIAGRAMMATIC ELEVATION OF SINGLE UNIT OR HALF-LOCOMOTIVE SHOWING RELATIVE POSITION OF WHEELS, RODS AND ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT up the armature without removal of the motor from theengine. At the general inspections, also, the enginetruck wheels are renewed if the flanges are sufficientlyworn, and the engine-truck boxes are babbitted as re-quired to take up any side play. At 15,000-mile intervals there is made what is calleda heavy inspection. As a matter of faet, this is really aduplication of the general inspection in so far as mechan-ical repairs are concerned, but electrical apparatus re-ceives more elaborate tests and all classes of electricalrepairs are made. The covers on the main motor arma-tures are removed, and the hand-hole plates at thebottom of the motor casing are taken off, so that thearmature banding, as well as the condition of the arma- ture coils at the back end of the armature, can be ex-amined thoroughly.
