The corniceof this order becomes the cornice of thebuilding and does not become so heavv asto destroy the scale of the building or tointerfere with the lighting of the breaking the entablature above thecolumns a very interesting play of light andshadow is obtained and each column be-comes a buttress supporting in ornamentalmotive. This breaking ofthe cornice serves severalpurposes. It gives a ter-mination to the top of thecrowning feature whichcarries the line up in aseries of pinnacles whichenrich this feature with-out an excessive use of or-nament ; at the same time,it makes the proportionsof this order more grace-ful. In a general way thecomposition was arrangedto be in harmony withthat of the adjoiningbuilding
