Shafer train winding road as it descends 18 miles and several thousand feet to the White rim trail of Canyonland National Park.

Shafer trail is a old cattle drive trail from the lower flats of, now, Canyonland National Park to the high country several thousand feet above the lower lands. It is a demanding road requiring much caution and one is amazed at the fact that cattle were driven up the treacherous dirt road with steep drop offs every inch of the climb out of the lower plains of Canyonland National Park. It is now a tourist attraction particularly four wheel drive auto enthusiasts. The many switchbacks and constant steep drop offs while navigating the Shafer trail is heart pounding and requires knowledge of driving on a dangerous road. Canyonlands invites you to explore a wilderness of countless canyons and fantastically formed buttes carved by the Colorado River and its tributaries. Rivers divide the park into four districts: Island in the Sky, The Needles, The Maze, and the rivers themselves. These areas share a primitive desert atmosphere, but each offers different opportunities for sightseeing and adventure
