Colonia Clunia Sulpicia administrative capital Roman province Northern Iberia theater thought held around 9,000 spectators

Colonia Clunia Sulpicia was the administrative capital of the Roman province of Northern Iberia. The theater is thought to have held around 9,000 spectators, making it the largest theater of its kind in Spain and Portugal. The upper seats were carved out of the bedrock, while stone, brick and mortar filled the rest of the theater. Archaeologists believe that in the 2nd century the theater was remodeled into a semi-amphitheater to accommodate gladiatorial shows.
