China: Zeng Guofan (26 November 1811 - 12 March 1872), statesman and victorious general for the Qing Dynasty against the Taiping Rebellion, c. 1860s. Zeng Guofan, Marquis Yiyong, birth name Zeng Zicheng and courtesy name Bohan, was an eminent Han Chinese official, general and devout Confucian scholar of the late Qing Dynasty. Zeng raised the Xiang Army to fight effectively against the Taiping Rebellion and restored the stability of the Qing Empire alongside other prominent figures such as Zuo Zongtang and Li Hongzhang, setting the scene for the era known as the "Tongzhi Restoration".
